Glasgow City moved five points clear of Hibernian at the top of the Scottish Building Society SWPL 1 after defeating them 1-0 at Airdrie on Thursday evening.
Republic of Ireland captain, Katie McCabe, who is on loan from Arsenal, fired home the only goal of the game in the first half.
Hibs’ keeper Jenna Fife tipped over a long-range effort from Hayley Lauder before City took the lead on 30 minutes, McCabe left alone to strike home.
McCabe might have made the game safe in the second-half but shot straight at the goalkeeper.
Hibs’ hopes of a leveller then grew as Abi Harrison headed wide from Rachel Small’s corner, City keeper Lee Alexander fumbled a Harrison cross but no-one was in the box to capitalise and Lucy Graham screwed her shot over from six yards out.
Alexander made a fine block to deny Lisa Robertson and Small missed the follow-up, as Hibernian went home without a point.
The two title-challengers meet again on 12th November and that is surely a must-win game for Hibs – who have a game in hand on City – if they hope to depose the champions of the last ten years.
