Former England defender Laura Bassett, who made 61 appearances for the Lionesses, has announced her retirement.

The 35-year-old was an experienced player in the WSL, mostly with Birmingham City and Notts County but won a runners-up medal with Chelsea and finished her career in Australia last year with Canberra United.

Bassett had been one of the first 17 female players to be given central contracts by FA, she suffered a black eye at the 2015 World Cup and then that famous own-goal in the semi-final defeat to Japan but then helped England to the last four of the Euros two years later.
