Day five at the 2023 FIFA Women’s World Cup featured victory for Italy, six goals for Germany and a hat-trick for Brazil’s Ary Borges.
Brazil were dominant in a 4-0 win over Panama in Group F, which they lead with France and Jamaica on a point each.
Borges struck twice in the first 45 for Brazil, with a far post header from Debinha’s cross and later netting at the second attempt on the rebound from the save by Yenith Bailey.
Beatriz netted from Borges’ clever backheel before the latter headed through the keeper’s legs to complete her treble.
Italy edged Argentina with an 87th-minute goal from super-sub Cristiana Girelli, to go level on points with Group G leaders Sweden.
The Azzurre had two first-half goals ruled out for offside, Arianna Caruso thwarted by the flag before Valentina Giacinti was similarly denied.
Cristiana Girelli came off the bench with ten minutes to go and made the breakthrough, firmly heading Lisa Boattin’s cross over keeper Vanina Correa.
Germany ran out 6-0 winners over Morocco as Group H got underway.
Sara Dabritz had a goal ruled out for offside but Alexandra Popp bagged a first-half brace, heading home a cross from Kathrin Hendrich and then directing home a corner taken by Klara Buhl.
Moments after the interval Buhl drove home the third after Lina Magull headed against the post.
Anissa Lahmari thought she had a goal back but it she was offside, then the unfortunate Hanane Aït El Haj conceded an own-goal.
A second own-goal followed from a corner and Lea Schüller made it six following up a save by Khadija Er-Rmichi.
