Two goals in the last quarter of an hour of the USA’s final warm-up match for the FIFA Women’s World Cup saw them see off Wales 2-0 in front of a sell-out 18,000 crowd in San Jose.
Wales were without the likes of Jess Fishlock, Rachel Rowe and Sophie Ingle, but restricted the world champions to a late double from substitute Trinity Rodman.
Goalkeeper Olivia Clark denied Lindsey Horan early on, while Lily Woodham went of injured at half-time following a head injury in a collision with Alyssa Thompson.
Kayleigh Green had to head the ball off the line to thwart the dominant Americans, who out-shot their visitors 22-2.
Lynn Williams and Sophia Smith combined to set up Rodman for the breakthrough, Rodman then firing into the top corner from outside the box with just three minutes remaining,
Elsewhere, South Korea had to come from behind to defeat Women’s World Cup finals debutants Haiti 2-1. Nerilla Mondesir gave the Haitians the lead, Ji So-yun levelled from the spot after the interval and Jang Sel-gi got the winner nine minutes from time.
