FIFA Women’s World Cup: Australia and Nigeria book last-sixteen berths

Australia and Nigeria made it through to the FIFA Women’s World Cup knockout stages, Republic of Ireland collected their first point.

Australia secured their place in the knockout stages at the expense of Canada, whom they dismissed 4-0.

Hayley Raso put The Matilda’s into an early lead despite an offside check on Steph Catley, who provided the cross.

Although Australia had a second goal eventually ruled out, Raso did successfully double their lead via a corner.

Mary Fowler turned in a Caitlin Foord cut-back and Catley converted a late penalty.

Australia will play the runners-up from England’s group.

While Republic of Ireland depart having gained a first World Cup point, the 0-0 draw saw Nigeria top the table.

Courtney Brosnan made a fantastic save to keep out Uchenna Kanu’s header, turning it into the bar.

Nigeria will next meet the winner of England’s group.

Japan stung Spain 4-0 in the Group C decider, to set up a last-sixteen clash with Norway.

Japan hit Spain with three first-half goals, as Hinata Miyazawa bagged a brace and Riko Ueki also scored.

Mina Tanaka’s tidy finish close to the end capped a fine result that secured top spot in the group, with Spain to face Switzerland next.

Zambia defeated Costa Rica to end their debut tournament with a first win.

Lushomo Mweemba scored inside three minutes, before Barbra Banda added a second from the penalty spot.

Melissa Herrera halved the deficit but in added time Racheal Kundananji made sure if the victory.
