Euro 2025 final as it happened

Spain dominate early proceedings

The Lionesses got off to a rocky start in the Euro 2025 final as Spain dominated the opening exchanges with the reigning champions struggling to land a blow on their opponents.

It was England who got the first big chance of the game, as a mistake from Spain goalkeeper Cata Coll gave Lauren Hemp the ball just five yards away from goal.

The Manchester City winger couldn’t capitalise on the Spain mistake though as Coll redeemed her error with a sharp save from close range.

After the Hemp chance the first half all went the way of Spain and after 25 minutes they found themselves in front.

Ona Batlle got in behind the England defence and the full back’s cross picked out Arsenal’s Mariona Caldentey, who guided a bullet header into the top corner to break the deadlock.

While Spain continued to dominate the first half up until the break, the world champions weren’t able to double their advantage –  which was something they would live to regret.

A tale of two halves

When the Lionesses stepped onto the pitch for the second half they looked like a completely changed team and the game immediately became more balanced.

After 12 minutes of pressure from Sarina Wiegman’s team England were able to secure an improbable equaliser.

Alessia Russo had only scored one goal at Euro 2025 up until the final, but the Arsenal forward came up big when it mattered most.

Russo’s club teammate Chloe Kelly was subbed into the game late during the first period after Lauren James was forced off the field with an ankle injury.

Kelly played an instrumental role in England’s goal as well as the final result, just like she did in 2022 and it was her cross that picked Russo out in a crowded box for the equaliser.

Russo made no mistake from close range, as her looping header found the top corner to send England fans across the country into pandemonium.

The final 30 minutes were a nervy affair for both sides but with the score still level after 90 minutes the Lionesses headed to extra time once more.

England prevail after penalties

Nobody was forced into extra time more than England at Euro 2025, with all three of their knockout games going the distance.

Spain were able to get back on top again in the extended period but the Lionesses were able to hold strong and force penalties after soaking up the pressure for another 30 minutes.

England missed the first penalty and after Beth Mead was forced to retake her spot-kick it looked like the Lionesses fairytale ending wasn’t to be this year.

However after some big stops from Hannah Hampton, England had the chance to retain their title with Chloe Kelly stood over the decisive penalty.

Kelly once again proved her ability in the biggest of moments with an unstoppable penalty and England lifted their second European Championship in yet another thrilling comeback from the Lionesses.
