Emma Byrne Retires

Brighton & Hove Albion goalkeeper Emma Byrne has announced her retirement from football.

The shot-stopper arrived at the Seagulls on a free transfer in January ahead of this year’s FAWSL Spring Series, and featured in all 9 of Albion’s games in the competition.

Byrne had been Arsenal’s number one for the previous 16 seasons and won every major domestic honour in the game, including 11 top-flight titles, 9 FA Cup winners medals and the European Champions League in 2007.

She has also won 3 FA WSL Cups, 5 FA Premier League Cups and made 127 caps for the Republic of Ireland, making her the country’s most-capped women’s player.
