Chelsea went five points clear at the top of the Barclays Women’s Super League with a 1-0 victory over Manchester United.

The Blues’ Maika Hamano and Sjoeke Nusken failed to score from around six yards out, before Mayra Ramirez was brought down by goalkeeper Phallon Tullis-Joyce and Guro Reiten drove the resulting penalty into the bottom corner.

Early in the second half Hannah Hampton pushed Geyse’s deflected effort out for a corner, Tullis-Joyce turned a Ramirez strike round the upright and got a crucial hand to Erin Cuthbert’s attempt at the other end.

United’s Maya le Tissier blocked Johanna Rytting Kaneryd’s goal-bound shot, Ramirez fired straight at Tullis-Joyce in the dying minutes.

Melvine Malard thumped the ball against the Chelsea crossbar in the 90th minute and United had some corners at the death but their unbeaten start was over.
