Sonia Bompastor faces an uncertain future at Chelsea following their humiliating 5-1 defeat to Manchester City.

Chelsea suffered a 5-1 defeat to their rivals, effectively ruling them out of winning their seventh consecutive Women’s Super League title.

As expected after such a heavy defeat, reports have already emerged that Bompastor could face the axe at Stamford Bridge.

Will Chelsea sack Sonia Bompastor?

The Times have reported that Sonia Bompastor is facing being axed by Chelsea following their defeat to Manchester City.

Chelsea are now 11 points behind the league leaders with just eight games to play. Manchester City almost have one hand on the trophy with a 10-point gap to second-place Manchester United, with Arsenal 13 points behind with a game in hand.

The Athletic, though, have reported that Bompastor retains the backing and support of the club.

Although Bompastor is facing heat from a portion of Chelsea supporters, the French head coach has plenty of credit still in the bank after leading Chelsea to a domestic treble last season.

Therefore, it would still seem an incredibly harsh decision for Chelsea to part ways with Bompastor at this time.

Especially given that Chelsea are still in with a strong chance of winning the Women’s Champions League this season.

Winning Europe’s most prestigious competition would still make it a successful season for Bompastor and her players.

What did Sonia Bompastor say about her Chelsea future?

Bompastor perhaps added fuel to the fire of speculation that she could leave Chelsea.

Speaking after the defeat to City, Bompastor said she would be “happy” to leave if the owners did not believe she was the “right person” for the job.

Bompastor though still believes she is the right person for the job and willl “always fight”.

She said: “I’m really confident in terms of someone who is really honest. If people think I’m not the right person to stay for this job at the club, I’ll be happy to go if they think that’s the right thing.

“But I will never give up. I know football, sometimes it happens, you can be in this situation. I always fight. But again, the institution of Chelsea is a lot more important than myself.”

Will Chelsea sign any new players?

Chelsea fans will be desperate for new signings before the end of the WSL January transfer window.

Paris Saint-Germain reportedly rejected a bid from Chelsea for Nigerian international Jennifer Echegini.

Chelsea were also interested in Trinity Rodman before the American signed a record extension with the Washington Spirit.

Bompastor lamented Chelsea’s lack of depth, stating she would have liked to have been “in a better place in terms of the last transfer windows”.

Chelsea have not recruited this month and brought in Alyssa Thompson, Ellie Carpenter, Mara Alber and Livia Peng during the summer window. Thompson and Carpenter have been regular starters, while Peng has been No.2 to Hannah Hampton and Alber has been loaned out to Werder Bremen.

She also said, “We’ll see,” when asked if Chelsea will do any business before the window shuts.
