Barclays Women’s Super League: Chelsea deny Arsenal at the death

Manchester United and Manchester City gain ground after Arsenal and Chelsea draw in the Barclays Women’s Super League.

Everton 3-2 Reading

Leicester City 3-0 Brighton & Hove Albion
West Ham United 0-1 Manchester City

Arsenal went ahead a dozen minutes into the second half, Kim Little scoring from the spot after Niamh Charles brought Caitin Foord down. Charles cleared off the line moments after, Zećira Mušović saved from Foord and turned a Steph Catley effort into the bar. Sam Kerr headed home a dramatic 89th-minute equaliser, meeting Jelena Čanković’s ball into the box.

Manchester United took just five minutes to score against Liverpool, Lucia Garcia meeting Ona Batlle’s cross and the ball going in off Gemma Bonner. Alesia Russo swept home from the edge of the box and it was 3-0 by the break as Hayley Ladd headed in from Maya le Tissier’s cross. Bonner later suffered a second deflected goal on her Liverpool return from Millie Turner’s shot, Martha Thomas came of the bench to swiftly net, Rachel Williams then heading in Ladd’s delivery, as United edged ahead of Arsenal on goal-difference.

Manchester City are within three points of second spot, thanks to Khadija Shaw’s 50th-minute goal when played through by Deyna Castellanos. City had dominated but had to survive a goalmouth scramble. Shaw later hit the post and Mackenzie Arnold saved the follow-up from Castellanos.

Everton were two up against Reading in just over half an hour, Katja Snoeijs turning in Gabby George’s cross and Jess Park finishing after a one-two with Nicoline Sorensen. Justine Vanhaevermaet headed a reply on the hour mark, George immediately restored the two-goal cushion but Deanna Cooper’s header got the Royals back into the game.

Leicester City finally secured their first points with victory in the basement battle over Brighton. Aileen Whelan struck just before the interval, then three minutes after the restart headed on a set piece for Sam Tierney to net. The Foxes sealed the win when substitute Monique Robinson added a third goal.
