Barclays Women’s Championship: Sunderland win derby thriller with Durham

Sunderland got a late win in the local derby thriller with Durham in the Barclays Women’s Championship.

Sarah Wilson gave Durham a first-half lead at Sunderland, but Liz Ejupi levelled on her debut against her former side. The Wildcats regained the lead just after the hour mark, Rio Hardy converting a penalty conceded when Neve  Herron brought down Molly Lambert. Abby Holmes brought the Black Cats back level, before substitute Katy Watson got them the winner.

London City Lionesses stayed top with all five goals at Crystal Palace, Sarah Ewens and Jamie-Lee Napier on target before Karin Muya’s double and a late Lucy Shepherd effort.

Second-placed Bristol City struck twice in stoppage time to overturn Coventry United’s advantage. Chloe Bull volleyed the hosts ahead, Eleanor Ryan-Doyle and Mary McAteer looked to have set the basement side on the way to their first points, only for Grace Clinton and Abi Harrison’s to hit back.

Birmingham City made a 62nd-minute breakthrough at Bramall Lane, Ashley Hodson’s ball across goal finished off by Claudia Walker. The win put Birmingham level on points with third-placed Charlton Athletic.

Lewes are within three points of Southampton after defeating them at St Mary’s. The Rooks’ Emily Kraft headed home from a 39th-minute corner.
