Arsenal into UEFA Women’s Champions League Q-Fs at a cost

Arsenal reached the UEFA Women’s Champions League quarter-finals despite a defeat to Lyon in which Vivianne Miedema was stretchered off.

Group C: Juventus 5-0 FC Zurich, Arsenal 0-1 Lyon

Group D: Rosengard 0-4 Bayern Munich, Benfica 2-6 Barcelona

Arsenal are into a record 15th quarter-final despite a 1-0 loss to Lyon front of 7,000 fans at the Emirates. Frida Maanum conceded an own-goal from a Vanessa Gilles’ header at the end of the first half, after which Miedema fell awkwardly off the ball.

Juventus put five past Zurich,with Cristiana Girelli getting four of them and two from the penalty spot. Lineth Beerensteyn got the other and the visitors were reduced to ten late when Irina Pando was dismissed.

Bayern Munich and Barcelona both confirmed their places in the last eight with away wins by four-goal margins. Bayern beat Rosengard as Tainara, Sydney Lohmann, Georgia Stanway and Julia Landenberger all found the net. Barcelona led by the same scoreline in Benfica, on the way to a 6-2 victory in which the hosts missed two second-half penalties.
