We Kick – Cwmbran Celtic

Vicki (Randy) Randall introduces us to South Wales League ‘newcomers’, Cwmbran Celtic.

How did the club and particularly your team get started?

The team Cwmbran Celtic is actually new this season 2012/13 but we all played our football together previously at Caerphilly but have now relocated. The majority of us have spent 4 years playing and training together. Cwmbran Celtic is the first ladies team in Cwmbran.

Tell us some of your top nicknames and why players have them and why some maybe don’t?

Rambo (Sarah Bailey) – she wears her headband across the front of her head and takes no prisoners on the pitch.
Posh (Laura Bradley) – she’s got an English ‘posh’ accent.
Randy (Vicki Randall) – bit of irony in the name.

Do you have a fairly settled team?

The team is nice and settled after a strong pre-season, we have kept the core of our old team and welcomed plenty of youth and new players to the squad, giving us plenty of options.

How did the 2011/2012 season go for you, what do you expect from 2012/2013 and who are your biggest rivals?

This season is a fresh start for our team but with plenty of experience within the squad we expect a top 3 finish, with the opportunity to progress into the Welsh Premier League over the next few years. Our biggest rivals will be a local derby versus PILCS.

Tell us a top fact about your team:

Our coach is ex Wales Captain Claire O’Sullivan and our goalkeeper is ex-Welsh International Su Young. So we have great experience to offer.

Who is your captain and tell us a bit about her (nickname, background, what she’s good at and not good at)?

Our captain is Vicki Randall (Randy) She eats, sleeps and dreams about football, Man utd mad! Organises everything from refs and pitches to thank you cards. Never misses training or an opportunity to kick a ball.

What about your coach/manager – are they serious, funny, good/bad and why?

They have played at the highest level so expect it of the team. Their moods vary dependant on what day of the week it is, i.e. Sunday = Hangover day for them!

Tell us a funny moment the team shared:

On cup final day we asked the girls what music they wanted for the changing rooms for motivation. Rambo’s pick was Susan Boyle (I’ve dreamed a dream). The whole team and coaches sat in the changing rooms swaying along and singing to SuBo, needless to say, we went onto win the final and SuBo is an ongoing joke now!

Who is the team’s jock (the fittest) and who is the joker?

Fittest is Kayleigh Phipps, biggest joker is obviously me [Vicki Randall], a big kid at heart.

Does the team/club have an unsung hero?

Unsung hero in our club has to be Russ, he turns up every week to support us and his daughter Sophie play. He often runs the line for us, even refs for us, collects the balls etc, etc, the list goes on but we love his support on the sidelines everyweek!

Who is always first to the bar/on the dancefloor on a team/club night out?

First to the bar is Kayleigh Phipps, who can certainly drink anyone under the table. First to break out the moves on the dance floor would be Sarah Tanetta.
