Super sub sets up three goals for Lyon’s #UWCL record-breaking win

Olympic Lyonnais’ players celebrate after winning the UEFA Women’s Champions League Final

Substitute Shanice van de Sanden sparked a record fifth Champions League trophy for Lyon – and third in a row – with a swift fightback to defeat ten-player Wolfsburg in Kiev.

Amandine Henry thumped the rebound from an early Lyon free kick straight at a team-mate and soon after at the other end, Alexandra Popp’s ball across the top of the six-yard box was almost connected with by Ewa Pajor.

Lyon goalkeeper then got away with clattering into Sara Bjórk Gunnarsdóttir when failing to get to a ball crossed in high by Anna Blässe.

Lucy Bronze volleyed wide via a Lyon corner in, Blässe made a crucial tackle in the box before Amel Majri could get a shot away and following another corner, Dzsenifer Marozsán’s deflected angled strike was well held by Almuth Schult.

Pajor would have been one on one with Bouhaddi but for an excellent Selma Bacha intervention, Ada Hegerberg then had a stooping header from Marozsán’s ball which Schult dived to save.

After the break, Eugenie Le Sommer went down in the corner of the box under pressure from Hegerberg and although Wolfsburg were not penalised there, they did soon lose Gunnarsdóttir when she pulled up with an injury.

Hegerberg found some space in the box but her effort was deflected over the top by Nilla Fischer and Griedge M’Bock Bathy headed over from the flag kick.

Popp did well to block Henry after Lucy Bronze won possession and Noëlle Maritz dramatically cleared off the goal-line when Henry nodded on Le Sommer’s initial header.

In the dying minutes, Delphine Cascarino’s far post cross found Le Sommer but Schult made a great block with her legs.

A stoppage-time free kick led to Bouhaddi flattening Bronze but the England defender was able to continue.

Three minutes into the added half-hour, a Pernille Harder solo effort took a deflection off Wendie Renard and beat Bouhaddi to put Wolfsburg ahead.

But the German side almost immediately lost Popp to a second yellow card and Shanice van de Sanden came off the bench to force another save by Schult.

Lyon were back level with an Henry half-volley on 97 minutes asissted by Hegerberg and moments later Van de Sanden delivered a cross for Le Sommer to turn the game on it’s head.

More pace from substitute Van de Sanden sealed the trophy for Lyon, racing away to cross for Hegerberg to net a record fifteenth goal in this season’s competition.

There was a fairy tale finish for retiring Camille Abily, who came off the bench to score with an inch-perfect shot from another Van de Sanden delivery.
