Poole pen puts Cardiff through
Cardiff City Ladies, despite having a testing time in the Premier League this term, have dumped mid-table WSL 2 outfit Oxford United out of the cup.
Oxford were close to not needing extra-time, never mind a shoot-out. Approaching the end of 90 minutes, Estelle Randall pulled off a great save when one-on-one with Taome Oliver and Emily Poole headed off her own goal line.
They might also have won it just four minutes from the end of the extra half-hour, however Hannah Short headed onto the home bar.
Randall saved a spot-kick for City at 4-4 and although Kelly Isaac missed the chance to seal City’s progress, United’s next effort came back off the bar and Poole’s strike was decisive.
Holders end Brighton hopes
Holders Manchester City began their defence of the trophy with a 2-0 win at Hope Powell’s Brighton.
They came close to going ahead after the half-hour when Claire Emslie hit the bar and a Jane Ross header was hacked off the line by Fern Whelan.
The goal came in the last minute of the first 45, as Jane Ross found Issy Christiansen, who rifled the ball in.
Ellie Roebuck did well to deny Ini Umotong an equaliser before Emslie extended the advantage in the 66th minute, driving goal-ward and drilling home inside the near post.
Chichester in shoot-out win over Saints
Underdogs The New Saints, playing a division below Chichester City, took their visitors all the way to penalties before their best-ever run in the cup was ended.
TNS led at half-time through Kim Bebbington but Chichester were level 6 minutes after the restart, Cherelle Khassal racing into the box to shoot across goal and into the bottom corner.
Alex Collighan hit the upright for City in the dying minutes but extra-time was required.
The visitors lost captain Emma Alexandre, stretchered off after a clash of heads in the 110th minute, leading to a temporary suspension of the match.
After the resumption no more goals were forthcoming and Chichester edged through 5-4 on penalties, Jess Lewry with the decider after Sadie Wilson-Blakeley saved the Saints’ last effort.
Ewers has the edge
A first-half Marissa Ewers effort was enough to see Birmingham City register a good win away at Reading.
Rachel Williams was involved in the goal on 34 minutes, finding Ewers whose strike hit the top corner.
The Royals had a good chance to level midway through the second half but Brooke Chaplen’s cross to Rachel Furness found the latter dispossessed.
City might have secured the win minutes later but Emma Follis watched her shot comes back off the crossbar.
Toffees take their chances
Everton battled back from a goal down to beat Bristol City 3-1, with Olivia Chance bagging a brace in front of England manager Phil Neville.
From a Loren Dykes cross, Chloe Arthur scored for the Vixens at the second attempt but a five-minute spell saw the home side turn their game around.
After Chance’s cross found its way into the back of net, a Chloe Kelly corner was headed in by Georgia Brougham on 55 minutes.
Kirstie Levell produced an excellent save from Charlie Estcourt to preserve Everton’s lead before Chance made the game safe, tucking home a Kelly cross.
Gurr grabs two for Charlton
Charlton Athletic won 3-2 after extra-time away to Blackburn Rovers.
The hosts went behind in unfortunate circumstances on 47 minutes, with a header going in off Alex Taylor’s leg but they were behind for only a short time, as Natasha Flint netted after Natalie Fenton’s initial shot was parried.
Charlotte Lee laid the ball back for Charlotte Gurr to curl over the keeper from the edge of the area to restore the Addicks lead only for Flint to reply again, with a free kick under the wall.
Flint rattled the bar soon after but in extra-time a quick break from led to Gurr crossing for Georgia Griffin to fire home the winner.
Durham come back to defeat Sheffield FC
Durham came from behind to score twice in the last half-hour and defeat Sheffield FC 2-1.
The deadlock was broken 3 minutes into the second half, when a corner was cleared as far as Emma Johnson’s, whose drilled shot was then turned home by Melissa Johnson.
Zoe Ness played in Beth Hepple to smash home the equaliser and on 73 minutes, Sarah Robson finished at the near post.
The Wildcats might have had a third but Hepple’s penalty was saved by Danielle Gibbons.
Early goal sets up Belles victory
Doncaster Rovers Belles were off to a flying start at Spurs, with Sophie Walton striking inside the near post from the edge of the box in only the 2nd minute.
Their second was another well-timed goal on 45 minutes, Rebecca Rayner bursting down the right and crossing for to Emily Simpkins to slide home.
Rayner then found the net herself and rounded of the scoring from distance in added time.
Salmon & Ejupi at the double for Villa
Aston Villa put aside their difficult WSL 2 campaign to see off FA WPL Northern leaders Middlesbrough 4-0.
Villa had a dream start as Ebony Salmon beats three defenders and burst into the box to fire into the far corner.
Middlesbrough fought back but conceded again as Elizabeta Ejupi slammed the ball home from close range from a Jade Richards header.
It was 3-0 by the interval as Salmon races onto a Jodie Hutton through ball to finish well and 3 minutes into the second period. Salmon’s cut-back was tapped home by Ejupi.
Rookettes roll on
Lewes came through an awkward tie at Keynsham Town by three goals to nil.
Amy Taylor gave them the advantage at half-time with a 39th-minute opener, following a brave challenge.
Georgia Bridges extended the lead just short of the hour mark with a powerful strike, after Avilla Bergin and Taylor were denied.
Bergin was again involved but it was Sarah Kempson who soon added the third with an impressive shot.
Dean nets double for Millwall
Millwall Lionesses made it through to the fifth round with two goals in either half against Coventry United.
Georgia Giddings and Charloe Devlin combined to set up Megan Wynne for the first goal and Rianna Dean doubled the advantage by the break with the help of Amber Gaylor.
Three minutes after the interval, Devlin played Dean through to score again and Ella Rutherford came off the bench to make it 4-0.
Coventry got a consolation when converting a penalty in the 82nd minute.
Gunners beat Glovers after penalty misses
Yeovil Town, without a league goal this season, failed to find the net again but did restrict Arsenal to a three-goal winning margin, with one penalty saved and another missed.
Jordan Nobbs got the Gunners off the mark after good work by Heather O’Reilly but then two chances from the spot were both passed up.
Beth Mead won a penalty but puts it wide and when Nobbs was brought down there was a delay for Yeovil’s Georgia Evans to be stretchered before Danielle Carter’s effort brought a great save from Megan Walsh.
Mead did find the net just before the half time whistle and an own goal by Hannah Miles from a corner made it 3-0 with over 30 minutes remaining.
In-form England bags two more for Reds
Liverpool scored four first-half goals on the way to a 5-0 win over Watford, with Beth England continuing her recent run of goals.
Alicia Johnson slotted in the first after being put through by Caroline Weir, who then curled in the second.
Beth England turned in a cross from Ashley Hodnson and Martha Harris fired a first-time effort past Fran Kitching from the edge of the box.
England completed the scoring on 63 minutes when clipping the ball over the keeper.
Blues crush Bees
Chelsea comfortably avoided any repeat of their last shock cup defeat by London Bees by hitting their hosts
Erin Cuthbert had the Blues ahead with a lobbed half-volley and Ji So-yun exhanged passes with Fran Kirby to double the lead and it was 3-0 by the break, Claire Rafferty threatening and the ball going in off a defender.
Bees’ keeper Nicola Hobbs gifted Kirby a goal, who then finished again at the near post before playing in Katie Chapman for the fifth.
Millie Bright netted at the second attempt after a block by Hobbs, Cuthbert turned in a fine Jonna Andersson delivery and then clinched her hat-trick with a penalty, with Chapman getting on the end of a Gemma Davison cross to make it double-figures.
Sunderland blow Brighouse away
Sunderland proved a step too far for, Brighouse Town, as they were overrun 13-0 by the team two divisions abobve them.
It had been a more modest 4-0 at the midway point, Dominique Bruinenberg with a brace, Bridget Galloway scoring via the post and Hayley Sharp with a tap-in.
The goals began to flow more freely into the last third, Lucy Staniforth scoring twice and substitute Mollie Lambert making an instant impact.
Abbey Joice saw her first time effort go in, Lambert got her second, Staniforth her third, Georgia Gibson then firing in her first for the club, Sharp heading in to double her tally and finally Lambert with her hat-trick goal.
