2018 Scottish Women’s Premier League Season Launched

The new Scottish Building Society SWPL season was launched today at Hampden Park, with all 16 clubs in attendance, writes Robert Wilson.

As the most well-attended press event in the league’s history, it was further evidence of the growth and interest of the game.

It’s also the first full year of league sponsorship by Scottish Building Society, which results in prize money for all 16 clubs. This will see 50% of the annual sponsorship contribution being returned directly to the SBSSWPL participants.

The first round of matches has already thrown up some mouth-watering games, with all eight ties scheduled for Sunday the 11th of February.

In the top division, there is an Old Firm derby as Celtic host Rangers while Glasgow City start their 12 in a row campaign at home to Stirling University. Runners-up last season, Hibernian, are at home to Spartans and newly promoted Forfar Farmington face Hamilton Academical, the only two sides to have won the SWPL 2 title since it’s conception.

In SBSSWPL 2, last year’s runners-up, Glasgow Girls, face Aberdeen who will hope to make an immediate return to the top division. The two newly promoted sides, Kilmarnock and Central Girls, face Motherwell at home and St Johnstone away, respectively. The final tie is an all Edinburgh affair as Edinburgh University Hutchison Vale host Hearts.
