England Squad for La Manga Camp Named

The England Women’s squad has been named for a 10-day training camp which gets under way at the weekend.

The Lionesses will meet at the national football centre at St. George’s Park before travelling to La Manga in Spain.

The FA have also confirmed that Mo Marleywill remain as interim head coach for this camp, as the process to appoint a new permanent head coach continues.

She has named a 30-player squad with returns for Chelsea duo Gilly Flaherty and Drew Spence, along with Houston Dash’s Rachel Daly.  Birmingham City striker Ellen White is back following injury.

In an interesting development, Casey Stoney will join the technical staff for this camp, as a player-to-coach apprentice.  Stoney, who is working towards her UEFA A Licence, will take up the role as part of a wider programme that is being developed, which will enable elite players to get more experience coaching with England teams across all age groups.

Marley said: “The camp will give us extra time to do some concentrated work on specific areas we have prioritised.

“After a well-earned break and time off in December players will be ready to push on and prepare for the SheBelieves Cup, a tournament with outstanding teams where we will need to be at our best and everyone will want to be a part of this.

“La Manga is crucial for our preparation and an ideal opportunity for players to compete for selection.”

FA director of women’s football Sue Campbell said: “We are making good progress in the search for the new permanent head coach but it’s crucial that we take our time to make the right appointment before the World Cup qualifiers begin again in April.”

England’s next home game is their 2019 FIFA Women’s World Cup qualifier against Wales at Southampton’s St. Mary’s Stadium on Friday 6 April (7pm KO).
