Ella Toone injury update: Manchester United midfielder out until March

Manchester City FC v Manchester United FC. Ella Toone.

Manchester United midfielder Ella Toone has suffered an injury setback, with the Lioness expected to be out until at least March.

Toone has a bone stress in her hip but won’t require surgery on the injury.

Ella Toone injury update

Manchester United are entering the business end of the season and the loss to one of their biggest stars is massive.

Ella Toone, who signed a new contract extension with United in January, will return before the end of the season.

“She’ll be back before the end of the season,” said Marc Skinner. “So, it’s probably about six to 10 weeks, depending on how it was from the point of it. So, you’re probably looking around six to eight weeks [from now], something like that.

“So yeah, she’ll be back before the end of the season and ready to go. We’ll be looking forward to welcoming her back.”

Toone has started in 11 of United’s 12 WSL games so far this season and will be a huge miss.

The attacking midfielder has three goals and five assists to her name already this year. With five assists, Toone leads the league in creating chances for her teammates.

After such an impressive 2025, Toone was named in the new years honours list with an MBE.

United are in the midst of a top three battle in the WSL this season. Only the top three teams can earn qualification to the Champions League.

The Red Devils finished third in the league last season and had to play qualifiers to get into Europe.

United will be hoping to avoid the same fate this season, but there is already a gap forming between them in fifth and Chelsea in second.

Will Ella Toone miss Champions League games?

It isn’t just in the WSL that United will be missing Ella Toone.

Toone’s team are into the last 16 of the Champions League and they face Atletico Madrid in the first round of the knockouts.

United have already played Atletico this season, beating the Spaniards 1-0 in the league phase.

In the rematch United will definitely be without Toone, with the last 16 kicking off at the beginning of February.

If the 26-year-old does return in around six weeks as expected, she could return to action shortly after the first international break of the year which comes in March.

It is highly unlikely that Toone will be fit enough to join up with Sarina Wiegman’s first England squad in 2026.
