Birmingham City have announced the signing of Swedish midfielder Wilma Leidhammar from IFK Norrköping for a club-record fee.

And in a press conference on Friday morning, her new head coach Amy Merricks had plenty of praise for her.

“I think Wilma as an individual brings with her a vast amount of experience, not just on the domestic stage but on the international stage too, with the football that she’s played,” Merricks said.

“I’ve seen her play for Sweden’s youth teams multiple times. She brings with her not only her ability on the pitch, especially in attacking areas and the way she can link up final-third passes and then contribute to goalscoring situations, but just her desire and her professionalism. She’s already demonstrated that.

“She’s hungry to be better every day and it’s really important for us that we bring in characters that match the values and the ambitions of this club, so we’re really excited to have her on board, as we are with the other new signings, and it’s bolstered the depth that we have and the options that we have, and now it’s about us earning the right [to succeed on the pitch], with the work that we do every single day.”

Merricks did not confirm whether or not Leidhammar would play a role in Birmingham City‘s Women’s FA Cup tie against Hull City this weekend, though, saying: “It would be great for her to be able to do so, but she is in training and raring to go.”

Wilma Leidhammar: Her football career so far

The 22-year-old has scored 27 goals and providing 11 assists since signing in 2022, with nine goals and seven assists in 2025.

At international level, she has represented Sweden across youth age groups, including the under-23s, scoring three times in 11 appearances.

In quotes distributed to the media, Leidhammar said “I’m really excited. First to meet them, then to train, play games, hopefully win and get promoted in the end. That is, of course, the dream.

“From my first conversations with Amy and Hope, I could feel the ambition of the club straight away, and it felt like the right place for me.

“I play with a lot of passion, play with my heart out, and it’s really important for me to enjoy every moment.”
