Why Kelly Gago could be on the move in January despite signing new Everton contract

Everton FC v Leicester City FC - Barclays Women's Super League (WSL)

Although she signed a new contract with the club in summer, Everton striker Kelly Gago could be on the move to greener pastures in January.

Gago has started just two games for the Toffees this year and could be in search of more regular game time.

Could Kelly Gago be on the move?

Kelly Gago signed for Everton in 2024 and after a successful debut campaign at the club, she was rewarded with a new deal in summer.

The striker is contracted with Everton until June of 2028 however there are rumours suggesting she could move in January.

Gago has impressed during her time on Merseyside so far. In her first season at the club Gago netted four goals in nine starts which earned the 26-year-old a first international call-up.

This year the French forward has started just two games in the league, but on her second last weekend she netted a brace.

Her two goals against Aston Villa weren’t enough to secure Everton’s second win of the campaign as the Toffees drew 3-3 thanks to Gago’s stoppage time equaliser.

Despite Gago’s good start to life with Everton last year, the club still signed Ornella Vignola in the summer.

The Spanish forward netted a hat-trick against Liverpool in her debut on matchday one. Since scoring three against the Reds, Vignola has been preferred to Gago up front.

As a result of her limited game time this season, there are reports circulating that suggest Gago could look for a move in January.

Issy Hobson signs new deal

It isn’t just Vignola who Gago is competing with for a spot in the Everton lineup.

Teenager Issy Hobson recently signed her first professional contract with the Toffees after establishing herself in Brian Sorensen’s matchday squads.

Although Hobson is yet to start for Everton this season, the 17-year-old was recalled from her loan at Nottingham Forest in October.

The English youngster is widely regarded as one of the brightest talents of the future and it would be no surprise to see her break into the Everton lineup by the end of this year.
