Wales captain Jess Fishlock is confident that her team can win the last of their Women’s World Cup qualifiers against Ukraine to finish in Group 6’s runners-up spot behind England and hopefully clinch a play-off shot at reaching the finals.
Currently in third place and behind Ukraine on goal difference, Wales must win in Lviv and hope that results in other groups work in their favour in order to book one of the four play-off places available from the seven European groups, writes TONY LEIGHTON..
The mathematics of working out that equation will only apply to the Welsh team if they can take all three points off Ukraine on Wednesday, so all that Fishlock and her team mates are concerned with ahead of the game is trying to win it.
The Seattle Reign midfielder, who has just made a loan move from her American club to German team FFC Frankfurt, is taking confidence from the performance Wales produced against Ukraine in the 1-1 Group 6 draw at Llanelli in April.
And as she looked ahead to Wednesday’s encounter she insisted that last month’s disappointing display in the 4-0 defeat by England in Cardiff is behind the Welsh players. “That was our one bad game in these qualifiers,” she said.
“Whatever the reasons were for that performance, there’s no point in dwelling on it and we have to move on. And in any case this Ukraine game was always more important then England in the context of final places in the group.
