We hear from Player of the Match, Manchester City midfielder, Jill Scott…
On winning the league:
It doesn’t even seem real. It’s just been such a journey since joining this club three years ago. The player, the right people that we’ve got in, just to see it finally come together and to win the league, it’s just fantastic.
On the ‘goal’:
I don’t think it touched my head, to be fair. I don’t care though, to be honest. I thought I’d play on it a little bit but I didn’t care who scored today obviously it was just about getting the result. Even if it had been 0-0 I’d have been happy. It was all about making sure we won the title today, in front of these fantastic fans. It was just like the pefect ending, really.
Is this the start for City, rather than the end?
I hope so, I don’t really want to think about it straight away but I’m sure that when tomorrow comes we will prepare well for the cup final on Sunday and then we have our first go in the Champions League, so it’s an exciting time to be part of the club. Myself, I feel very lucky to be part of it all.
Is it sweeter for you, having gone close so often with Everton?
Yeah, I remember being in this position, can’t remember how many years ago, but we needed a point against Arsenal and we lost the title for Everton. So, I was very nervous for this game, if I’m honest. I’ve played in the top league from about the age of 14/15, so it’s been about 14 years for me. So I was nervous today but just very lucky to be a part of this group of player, group of staff and so happy that we’ve done it because the girls sacrifice everything day in and day out and I suppose that’s what champions are made of.
Were you surprised how ‘easy’ the victory was in the end, although it may not have seemed like it earlier on?
Chelsea did really well first half, tjhey really did come at us but it means you’re going to run out of a bit of steam second half so it was good that we went in with the 1-0 lead. We probably didn’t deserve it, they possibly had a few more chances but the game really opened out and it maybe was a little easier in the end but I suppose that was always what was going to happen as they were chasing the game.
How important now to go undefeated for the season?
That was the first thing Nick said when he got us in the huddle – he’s always thinking about the next thing – I’m just like ‘let us enjoy the moment’ but straight away he was saying, ‘Look girls, we prepare for the cup final’ so I think he’s talking about us taking it easy tonight and then he is looking at us going unbeaten. That will definitely be our target. To have only conceded three goals so far, including two penalties, has been fantastic.
