Alessia Russo and Aggie Beever-Jones lead WSL Player of the Month shortlist for September

Alessia Russo Player of the Month shortlist

England internationals Alessia Russo and Aggie Beever-Jones are on the shortlist for the W0men’s Super League (WSL) Player of the Month for September.

The six players up for the award, all representing six different clubs, were named on Friday.

Out of the six candidates, only Russo won the Player of the Month award at least once during the 2024-25 season.

Mariona Caldentey, who last month was named the PFA Players’ Player of the Year for last season, has been left off the shortlist.

Who has been nominated on the shortlist for WSL Player of the Month for September?

Aoba Fujino (Manchester City)

Manchester City star Aoba Fujino has been one of the stars of the season across the opening weeks of the WSL season.

Fujino scored in the 5-1 win over Tottenham and also provided a crucial assist in the 2-1 victory against Brighton.

Yui Hasegawa was left off the shortlist despite her excellent performances so far this season.

Aggie Beever-Jones (Chelsea)

Perhaps the favourite to win the WSL Player of the Month award for September is Chelsea striker Aggie Beever-Jones.

The England international has scored in each of Chelsea’s four victories in the WSL this season, with the Blues sitting top of the table with a maximum 12 points.

Beever-Jones’ performances have led to her topping our recent WSL striker power rankings.

Alessia Russo (Arsenal)

Russo makes the shortlist despite blanking in three of Arsenal’s four games so far this campaign.

The England striker’s only two goals came in their 5-1 thrashing of West Ham, while she has also registered two assists this campaign.

Russo though failed to score or assist in either of Arsenal’s recent two draws against Manchester United and Aston Villa.

Anna Sandberg (Manchester United)

Manchester United have taken 10 points from a possible 12 and have been one of the most consistent teams so far this season.

Sandberg provided an assist against the London City Lionesses, and has averaged no lower than a 7.3 rating with FotMob across her three appearances.

There is perhaps some surprise that teammate Melvine Malard has been left off the shortlist. The French forward scored braces against both Leicester City and the London City Lionesses.

Maisie Symonds (Brighton)

Brighton star Maisie Symonds has been one of the most consistent performers in the WSL so far this season.

Her performances have helped Brighton pick up seven points out of a possible 12 so far this campaign.

The midfielder put in good shifts in recent victories over Everton and West Ham, as well as the goalless draw against Aston Villa.

Cathinka Tandberg (Tottenham)

Cathinka Tandberg makes the shortlist after a month in which she scored what will be one of contenders for goal of the season.

A summer arrival from Hammarby, she provided two goals and one assist in Tottenham’s opening four games.

Her best game was against Everton, where she provided an assist and scored a 40-yard lob.

Who has been named on the shortlist for WSL Manager of the Month?

The four contenders for the WSL Manager of the Month for September are taken by the sides sitting inside the top four.

Sonia Bompastor’s Chelsea side has taken maximum points, while Manchester United are second under Marc Skinner.

Andree Jeglertz and Martin Ho, both appointed in the summer by Manchester City and Tottenham, have also made the shortlist.
