Katie Barker says that Wrexham were “relieved” to take all three points from Barry Town United at the Racecourse, snatching a 3-2 win at the last moment in their second Adran Premier match of the season.
It came after Jenny Sugarman’s side went 2-0 up in the first half, but let the lead slip after half-time.
Jodie Bartle and Hannah Snape scored their first goals for the club early on, but a Phoebe Davies own goal and then a Keira Harris leveller made the last minutes edgy.
Then Snape’s last-gasp corner swung straight into the net to put Wrexham on top of the league.
“Three points is important,” Barker told the club’s YouTube channel. “We made it tough for ourselves again. We’re showing the right mindset to keep winning games when we make it tough for ourselves, but we’re three points and top of the league, so it’s a good start.”
Katie Barker: The chances were there
Barker added that the squad boasted “resilience”, which she said they had shown “in abundance at the start of this season”.
“We’ve got a never-give-up mindset,” she explained, “and I think in our heads we are always going to win games. We know that. We keep pushing right to the end.
“The chances were there, we weren’t taking them – myself included – but we managed to get the win, and we’re top of the table.”
Wrexham are currently top of the table on goal difference, with second-place Aberystwyth Town also unbeaten and having conceded no goals thus far.
Barry Town United and last season’s runners-up Briton Ferry Llansawel are both at the foot of the table, having lost their opening two fixtures.
Jenny Sugarman: Wrexham made life difficult for ourselves
Head coach Sugarman admitted afterwards that it was not her side’s best performance.
“We’re disappointed particularly with how we showed up second half, but we in the end found a way to get the third goal,” she said.
“We certainly made life difficult for ourselves early on in that second half. As the half went on, we found our feet a little bit, we started to create a few more chances, we tested the goalkeeper an awful lot.
“It felt like we weren’t getting that last little moment to get the goal, but Hannah’s delivery for that set piece was excellent.”
Wrexham’s next match in the Adran Premier is against The New Saints, at Park Hall, on Sunday, 21st September.
