The next edition of the World Sevens Football tournament will be held in Fort Lauderdale in the United States, from December 5th to 7th this year.

Beyond Bancard Field, the home stadium of the USL Super League’s Fort Lauderdale United FC, will host the event.

It comes after the seven-a-side competition debuted in May, featuring eight teams based in Europe.

Bayern Munich beat Manchester United 2-1 in the final to take home a massive prize pot.

The prize pot for winning the World Sevens Football was more than the winners of the 2024-25 Women’s Super League, FA Cup and Champions League combined.

The Guardian reports that the clubs involved in December’s tournament are likely to be from the United States, Brazil and Mexico.

European teams are unlikely to be involved as they will be in the middle of their domestic seasons. The Women’s Super League fixtures see action kick off on Friday, September 5th, with Chelsea vs Manchester City.

What is World Sevens Football?

World Sevens Football is a seven-a-side tournament with a twist from other small-sided football events that have grown in popularity over recent years, such as the Baller League.

Rather than retired players or celebrities, those involved in World Sevens Football are current, elite players from existing professional clubs.

The inaugural tournament in Portugal was staged in the lead-up to the Women’s Champions League final.

It involved Ajax, AS Roma, Bayern Munich, Benfica, FC Rosengard, Manchester City, Manchester United and Paris Saint-Germain.

Games are played using a half-size pitch and seven-a-side goals, with rolling substitutions and 15-minute halves.

This year’s competition will come two weeks after the National Women’s Soccer League Championship final. However, teams involved have not yet been confirmed.

The tournament is backed by Jennifer Mackesy, a minority owner of Gotham FC.

What is the prize money on offer?

According to The Guardian, the prize pool for December’s event will be $5 (£3.7m).

During the tournament held in May, Bayern Munich took home a $2.5m (£1.8m) winning prize after beating Manchester United.

The Red Devils didn’t leave empty-handed, as they claimed £739,000 for finishing second.

Paris Saint-Germain and Manchester City, who finished third and fourth, walked away with prizes of £480,000 and £258,000 respectively.

Remarkably, Bayern Munich’s winning prize was more than the winners of the 2024-25 Women’s Super League, FA Cup and Champions League combined.

Chelsea took home £500,000 for winning the WSL title and £430,000 for the FA Cup. Arsenal, meanwhile won over £293,000 for lifting the Champions League.

Manchester United head coach Marc Skinner celebrated their semi-final win over City in May by dancing in the middle of a circle of his players and pretending to deal money out of his hand.

He said before their final defeat: “For any team who wins it would do a lot. First and foremost the players are enjoying it and having a good time. If we then get to the point where we can win the prize money then of course that can be huge for us.”
