How England and Italy reached the semi-finals

On three different occasions, England looked to be heading out of Euro 2025 at the quarter-final stage.

Sweden held a 2-0 lead after 78 minutes, before quick back-to-back goals from Lucy Bronze and Michelle Agyemang took the game to extra-time.

The game then went to penalties, which resulted in being one of the most dramatic shootouts in women’s football history.

Sweden twice were just one kick away from advancing to the semi-finals. However, on both occasions they failed to score.

Lucy Bronze took advantage to score England’s third penalty, before Sweden missed again, sending the Lionesses into the last-four.

Italy had their own drama to contend with during their quarter-final against Norway.

Ada Hegerberg missed from the penalty spot, but did pull Norway level after Cristiana Girelli netted the opener.

Girelli took advantage of some slack defending to score in the 90th minute and send Italy through to their first semi-final since 1997.

What is the team news ahead of England vs Italy

The big news for England is that Leah Williamson is ready for selection against Italy.

She came off with an ankle injury during the Lionesses’ victory over Sweden. However, she returned to training on Monday and Sarina Wiegman said she is ready to feature.

Chloe Kelly is pushing for a place after creating both of England’s goals off the bench against Sweden. She also expertly scored during the penalty shootout.

Sarina Wiegman will likely keep an unchanged squad though from the one that beat Sweden.

Italy could look to switch to a back-three against England. Martina Lenzini would likely step into the team if this is the case.

Cristiana Girelli will again lead the line after making a huge impact in the win over Norway.

England Women predicted XI: Hampton; Bronze, Williamson, Carter, Greenwood; Toone, Walsh, Stanway; James, Hemp, Russo

Italy Women predicted XI: Giuliani; Lenzini, Salvai, Linari; Oliviero, Caruso, Giugliano, Severini, Boattin; Cantore, Girelli

England vs Italy prediction

A victory for England will send them through to their consecutive major final after Euro 2022 and the 2023 World Cup.

The Lionesses would then face either Spain in a rematch from their 2023 World Cup final defeat, or a rematch with Germany from Euro 2022.

Italy have reached the semi-finals for the first time since 1997. That was also the last time they reached the final.

However, they have been far from convincing during Euro 2025. They only reached the quarter-finals thanks to a narrow 1-0 win over Belgium and a 1-1 draw with Portugal.

Andrea Sochin’s side showed great spirit against Norway but the semi-final with England might prove a step too far.

So here at SheKicks, we predict England will beat Italy 3-1, which according to the UK’s best betting sites, is available at odds of 11/1.

Prediction: England 3-1 Italy– 11/1

England vs Italy betting tips

  • England vs Italy betting tip 1: Alessia Russo and Lauren James to have 2 shots on more each on target – 7/2

England’s attackers should get plenty of chances against an inferior Italian side during the Euro 2025 semi-final.

Alessia Russo might have just one goal to her name at Euro 2025, but she has been heavily involved in most of England’s positive play this summer.

Lauren James scored twice in the victory over the Netherlands and has been quiet since then.

However, after the way England survived their quarter-final with Sweden, the Lionesses will be positive about their chances of reaching the final and both Russo and James will be heavily involved.

  • England vs Italy betting tip 2: Over 2.5 goals – 8/13

Each of England’s four games at Women’s Euro 2025 has resulted in over 2.5 goals.

Italy’s clashes with high-calibre teams in Spain and Norway also saw over 2.5 goals each.

Therefore, the chance of over 2.5 goals in the Euro 2025 semi-final appears likely.

Golden Boot contenders

There are four England players in the top 10 among bookmakers to win the Golden Boot award.

Lauren James, who has two goals to her name, is fifth at odds of 14/1. Alessia Russo has just one goal to her name but is next up, tied with Georgia Stanway at odds of 33/1.

Beth Mead has been a substitute at Euro 2025, so is a long-shot at odds of 50/1.

Spain star Esther Gonzalez is the favourite to win the award after netting four goals already.

Euro 2025 outright odds

At the time of writing, England are second favourites behind Spain to win Euro 2025 at odds of 11/4.

Of the four teams left standing, Italy are the biggest underdogs to lift the trophy at a price of 18/1.
