Will Maya Le Tissier finally get her chance for the Lionesses in October friendlies?

Maya Le Tissier. Manchester United vs Liverpool

Maya Le Tissier is widely regarded as one of the most reliable defenders in the WSL, but she hasn’t yet been given a chance for the Lionesses.

Why doesn’t Le Tissier play for England?

The main reason behind Sarina Wiegman not playing Maya Le Tissier for England is due to the fierce competition in her position.

England’s centre back’s are one of the strongest parts of the team, with Leah Williamson usually partnered alongside either Jess Carter or Esme Morgan.

Many supporters believe that it should be Le Tissier lining up alongside Williamson but the Dutch manager has largely refused to play her at all.

Le Tissier has been named as an unused substitute in 12 of England’s last 13 games.

The 23-year-old didn’t feature at all in Switzerland as the Lionesses were crowned European champions at back to back championships.

It is incredible that Le Tissier hasn’t been given a chance for England considering her club record with United.

The defender is Manchester United’s club captain and she is currently on a streak of over 70 consecutive games started for her club.

With United starting the season off in great form it would be hard to leave Le Tissier out of England’s upcoming friendlies, but Wiegman has always found a reason to not play the defender in the past.

Will Sarina Wiegman give Le Tissier a chance?

When speaking in the week leading up to the Lionesses Homecoming Tour, Sarina Wiegman further infuriated Manchester United fans.

The England manager discussed Maya Le Tissier’s best position for England and her solution wasn’t exactly what fans wanted.

“She plays centre-back every single [club] game and I think she has good performances, but I also think that, for us, her first position still is the right full-back position.” Wiegman said.

Le Tissier would be competing with Lucy Bronze in the fullback position – someone she was compared to by Manchester United manager Marc Skinner earlier this season.

While she would be competing with Lucy Bronze at full-back, Le Tissier would have a better chance of starting in the middle of defence for the upcoming friendlies.

Arsenal and England captain Leah Williamson is currently recovering from knee surgery. Williamson has missed the start of the WSL campaign and while she is expected back soon, the 28-year-old is not with England for their upcoming friendlies.

Le Tissier has been tipped to become England captain one day but she will need to start actually playing for her nation for that to happen.

The United defender has just eight senior caps for England despite making her debut in November 2022.
