Will Alyssa Thompson make Chelsea debut vs Aston Villa this weekend?

Chelsea want to sign Alyssa Thompson from Angel City
Alyssa Thompson became Chelsea’s club-record signing in summer after joining from Angel City for £1.1million

Chelsea’s new club-record signing Alyssa Thompson could be in line to make her WSL debut for the Blues when they face Aston Villa on Sunday.

Alyssa Thompson was one of three world record signings this summer to breach the £1million transfer fee.

When will Alyssa Thompson make her debut?

Despite signing for Chelsea just before the first WSL got underway this season, Alyssa Thompson is yet to make her Chelsea debut.

The former Angel City forward had her move to London delayed with the NWSL side keen to keep hold of their best player.

Thompson was eventually able to force a move to Chelsea though with the Blues paying £1.1million for their new superstar.

Although last Friday’s WSL opener against Manchester City came too early for the American international, Thompson is expected to make her debut this weekend.

Chelsea were able to manage without their new record signing as they edged past Manchester City 2-1 on opening day.

After the Blues secured Thompson on deadline day, their odds of retaining the WSL title this year shortened even more with UK betting sites.

Sonia Bompastor teases Thompson debut

Prior to Chelsea’s first game of the season, Sonia Bompastor teased that Thompson would ‘make her debut soon’.

Having trained with the Blues for a full week now Thompson should make her debut at Villa Park on Sunday.

“As Chelsea, to be able to attract the best players is a good sign for the future. We never shy away from our ambitions.

“Alyssa is a great player, she is still young, but from a young age she has already a lot of potential, a lot of quality and talent. It was important for us to strengthen the squad and the team, and Alyssa was in our shortlist of top-class players … It’s important to have quality but also depth – Alyssa will add both.”

Thompson’s debut could also coincide with Sam Kerr’s return to action, with the Matilda expected to feature in her first game since January 2024 this weekend.

Chelsea face off against Aston Villa on Sunday with kick off at 12:00 BST. The WSL clash is being shown live on Sky Sports Mix.
