Why didn’t Katie McCabe wear a poppy on her shirt this weekend?

Arsenal's Katie McCabe signs a new contract

Arsenal’s Katie McCabe was one of many Irish stars who chose not to wear a poppy on their kit in the WSL this weekend.

Why didn’t Katie McCabe wear a poppy?

Katie McCabe made the headlines in Arsenal’s 4-1 win over Leicester at the weekend.

The Irish defender opted to not wear a poppy on her kit for remembrance day as instead she took to the pitch in an old kit.

Other players wore the special edition kit as a mark of respect for Remembrance Day, with their shirts sold by the club after the game in support of the Royal British Legion.

McCabe chose not to wear a poppy this year as many Irish stars don’t associate with the British military for political reasons.

The 30-year-old has worn a poppy in the past but this season chose not to represent the British military. McCabe did still stand present for the minute of silence for respect before Arsenal’s win.

McCabe wasn’t the only Irish star who chose not to wear a poppy as numerous Irish stars followed suit with the national team captain.

Brighton’s Caitlin Hayes, Crystal Palace’s Abbie Larkin and London City Lionesses midfielder Hayley Nolan also chose not to wear a poppy.

What next for Katie McCabe?

Following their win against Leicester, Arsenal are looking to build up their momentum in the league.

Unfortunately for the Gunners the rest of the top five also won on matchday seven. Wins for Chelsea, Tottenham, Manchester United and Manchester City all meant that the gap to the top four remained the same for Renee Slegers’ team.

The top of the table could get a shake-up this weekend though, as Arsenal play host to Chelsea in the WSL.

Should Arsenal finally end the Blues’ unbeaten run they could close the gap to the champions down to just two points.

But that is easier said than done, as Chelsea haven’t lost a league game in 33 matches dating back to May 1st, 2024.
