Who is Lenna Gunning-Williams? Tottenham youngster ends scoring drought in FA cup

Tottenham academy graduate Lenna Gunning-Williams finally ended her goal drought on Sunday in Spurs’ FA Cup win over Leicester.

Gunning-Williams hadn’t scored in over three years before finding the back of the net in the cup.

Who is Lenna Gunning-Williams?

Lenna Gunning-Williams joined Tottenham as a teenager and she has been one of the most exciting academy graduates from the club in the past five years.

The 20-year-old signed her first professional contract with Spurs in 2023. After a year developing within the first team, the forward finally broke into Tottenham’s WSL squad last season.

Gunning-Williams recorded 16 appearances in the top flight last year and she was even nominated for the league’s young player of the season award.

Despite her good form, the Tottenham starlet couldn’t find her scoring touch last season.

After three years without a goal for the club Gunning-Williams finally ended her drought in the FA Cup this weekend.

“I’m buzzing,” she said after the Leicester win. “I’m really proud of myself because I feel like I’ve trained really well recently and I’ve had the girls behind me, giving me tips and pointers on how I can be calmer when I come on to the pitch instead of being a bit anxious.

“I think today I really showed that. I felt a lot calmer coming on and was lucky enough to get a goal after Matilda did all that work and I just tapped it in.”

Having not scored in so long, Gunning-Williams felt the nerves in front of goal.

“We’re always taught to follow up for rebounds just in case and to anticipate someone missing. I just thought, ‘please don’t miss’. I’ve got the goal right there and it seems so big and you do get caught in two minds – do I tap it or do I absolutely welly it – but I’m glad it went in.

Tottenham Gunning for European football

Gunning-Williams has made just five appearances in the WSL this season – all off the bench.

Now she has finally ended her scoring drought, the Spurs striker will be hoping to get more minutes in the top flight.

Tottenham rose up to fourth in the WSL last weekend with Arsenal drawing a blank against Manchester United.

Martin Ho’s side are now well in contention for a European finish – with the top three teams entering the Champions League next season.

Spurs have never qualified for the Champions League so a top three finish would mark history for the club.

With relegation threatened West Ham and Liverpool coming up next, Tottenham will be confident of rising up the WSL table ahead of the run-in.
