Who is Mared Griffiths? Manchester United teenager handed first professional contract

Mared Griffiths signs first professional contract with Manchester United

Manchester United have added the talents of Mared Griffiths to their ranks, with the 18-year-old signing her first ever professional contract with the club.

Mared Griffiths came through the FA Wales (FAW) academy at the beginning of last year before spending the season with the youth setup in Manchester.

For the under-21’s side Griffiths made an instant impression and after scoring two goals on her club debut against Wolves, the teenager began to turn heads.

After enjoying a successful campaign with the Red Devils youth team the 18-year-old was handed some chances for the senior side off the bench.

As well as enjoying success with United, Griffiths has also been capped for Wales at both youth and senior level – including in the Nations League earlier this year.

With the new WSL season just around the corner, United decided to reward Griffiths with her first ever professional contract and at just 18 she becomes one of the youngest to ever sign on to the team.

Keira Barry is the only other 18-year-old to have signed on to the team after earning her contract in 2023.

Mared Griffiths thanks Manchester United

Speaking after her contract announcement, the United youngster said: “Yeah, I’m well impressed with myself and the family and so grateful for this opportunity from the club.

“I think once I left the FAW Academy in North Wales, moving up to Manchester and playing with the Under-21s there’s always an aim [to play in the senior team].

“You can’t just settle down with just playing for the 21s. I think every player has to set high standards for themselves and you have to back yourself to be able to do it one day.

“Being able to target something like this and achieve it first year in, I think it’s a good deal at the end of the day.”
