Whitley Bay Retain Northumberland Cup

There was a rush of goals with the scoreline at 2-2 after only 18 minutes and Newcastle were first to find the net 11 minutes in, as Liz Fraser lobbed home.

Whitley Bay equalised after a goalmouth scramble from an Ella Stevenson corner which saw Lucy Watson turn the ball in.

Steph Ord restored Whitley’s lead on 17 minutes but moments later, Bethany Diamond crossed and Lauren Driver slid in to level.

United’s Lauren Robson made a great diving save to keep the score at 2-2 at half time.

Both teams were denied by the woodwork in a five-minute spell before the hour mark.

Driver hammered the ball against the post on the volley from another Diamond delivery and then Ord struck the bar with a free kick from all of 35 yards.

Ord again hit the bar in the last minute but this time Sarah Bennett was on hand to score from the rebound.
