Where there’s muck, there’s money

Bex Powell of Mudeford Phoenix Girls & Ladies FC reports on how the Hampshire League club have been raising important funds.

We have had a very successful couple of events raising over £500 for our small club, so are very happy with these funds.

We are now into our tenth year of operation with teams of all age groups from U-10s through to senior ladies. We have a very community-based feel to the club, our secretary was involved in originally setting up the club as he wanted a team for his daughter to play in and now ten years on, that daughter has now taken over managing our U-10 team.

With the money recently raised we hope to set up a ‘Friends of Phoenix’ fund that we can use to help out parents who struggle financially to provide the girls with the kit needed to continue playing.

First up on our fundraising calendar was a skittles night with mainly senior players, friends and family members taking on teams made up of managers and board members. With a bunch of competitive individuals all together, needless to say it was an eventful evening with plenty of fun banter between the teams. From sales of tickets plus our raffle and an extra game of killer, our profit for the night was over £250.

The following week, after a mad panic to reschedule the day of our planned beach clean due to a bad weather forecast on the original day, we brought it forward a day and had a glorious evening. With the health and safety brief completed, we all set off along the beach with bags and pickets in hand. It always amazes me how much rubbish you find in places even when they don’t even look that dirty.

The young players seemed to rise to the challenge and as most football players that competitiveness came out once again and there were competing to find and collect the most litter. We were all kitted out in our team shirts to promote our club, the game and show a connection to the local community within the even that we we’re participating in.

We had asked all players to raise sponsorship and with funds still coming in from players, we are well on course to raise a further £250-300. A fantastic outcome and achievement for the club and all those involved in the organisation of these events.
