When Ten Goals Just Ain’t Enough

Penwortham manager, Adele Teasdale, recalls last weeks crazy Lancashire League match which saw her side concede ten goal at Burscough Dynamo but net a dozen to take the points.

How is your season going and what were your expectations for the match?

Our season has started very well, we are a newly promoted side from Division 2, ready for a challenge. We have 20 players signed on for us, all very enthusiastic, bubbly and always wanting to learn.

Our first match to the 2014/15 campaign was a well deserved 8-2 win away against Blackpool FC. We then played Pennington and came away with a 2-2 draw. Then we had a dissapointing exit in the Cup against Morecambe 15-2….they are quite a few leagues above us! The result at Burscough Dynamo has had a lot of interest, having received phone calls and text messages from other managers in our league.

The team’s expectations for the match was to obviously try and come away with the 3 points, even though we had never beaten Burscough on their home turf. They are a very good side, very fast and clearly have a fighting spirit.

When did you feel the scoreline might be something out of the ordinary?

Within 5 minutes of kicking off we were 2-0 ahead. We had Burscough on the back foot, it seemed they hadn’t showed up, until an unfortunate misplaced pass led to them getting one back. By half time we were losing 5-4, myself and our two coaches – Ryan Penzer and Danny Booth – knew we were a strong enough team to come back and turn this scoreline around. However, we didn’t expect a scoreline of such a high figure. Completely end to end from both sides!

How come there was such a massive goal tally?

We had a plan at half time which was to relax when on the ball, play our good football, letting the ball do the work and the goals would come… And we were right. Some fantastic goals scored from both sides, both teams never have up. When Burscough scored in the second half, each one of my team dug deep and found the determination to come out on top. Myself and the coaches are so proud of each one of them!

Did the lead change hands much?

The second half scoreline changed hands that much, even I couldn’t keep up. I remember Burscough leading 8-7, then next time we worked it out, we were leading 9-8. A totally bizarre game but very exciting for the neutrals watching.

Could anyone but the ref keep count of the goals and who got the most for Penwortham?

People watching on the sidelines didn’t have a clue what the score was, good job the referee had a pen and pad! Our goals came from Hannah Taylor (2), Louise Gibbins (3), Holly Robinson (3) and Emma Kay (4).

Is this the maddest thing you’ve experienced in football?

By far one of the funniest, nerve racking, enjoyable and tense matches I’ve ever been part of, although it’s always better when you come out on top. I’m not hoping to have results like this every week… Then again, if we win, I don’t mind!

Penwortham’s match yesterday had a slightly more modest goal tally, as they defeated Southport Shoreline 6-2.
