Welsh Champs Start With Goal Glut

The Welsh Premier Women’s League kicked off on Sunday and there were definitely plenty of goals to start the season off.

Sunday September 13th
WELSH PREMIER LEAGUE

Cwmbran Celtic 1-1 Cardiff City FC
Cyncoed 2-0 Aberystwyth Town
Newcastle Emlyn 0-4 MBi Llandudno
PILCS 4-8 Cardiff Met
Port Talbot Town 3-1 Wrexham
Rhyl & Prestatyn 1-4 Swansea City

League Champions Cardiff Met (pictured above) played their part in a twelve-goal thriller as they started their title defence at PILCS. The hosts opened the scoring with a goal in the 14th minute through their new Portuguese signing Jassie Costa, only for it to be cancelled out a minute later with Robyn Pinder grabbing her first of the afternoon. Pinder found the back of the net 3 minutes later and the reigning champions never looked back. Met were three goals ahead thanks to Erin Murray in the 20th minute and Emily Allen in the 34th minute but PILCS are looking to improve on last season’s third place finish and top goal scorer Lyndsey Davies grabbed her first of the season in the 38th minute.

New signing Alana Murphy closed the gap after the break but Cardiff Met were not going to let the lead slip away thanks to a goal from Allen and Pinder’s third. PILCS were not going to give up easy and Davies got her second of the afternoon but with Met keen to keep their league title, they finished their scoring spree with Pinder getting her fourth and sub Stacey Ayling coming off the bench to make it eight.

Newly-promoted Cyncoed started their campaign with a win over Aberystwyth Town. Cyncoed were two goals up at half-time and managed to maintain that lead to take all three points in their first game at this level.

Swansea City lost the title race on goal-difference last season and will be looking to make sure it doesn’t happen this time. Emma Beynon opened the scoring in the 16th minute, goals from Kelly Newcombe and Sophie Hancocks made sure the Swans went into the break 3-0 up. Rhyl & Prestatyn pulled one back just after half-time with Ashley Mills finding the back of the net. Beynon got her second of the afternoon in the 78th minute, making sure that the away team travelled back down South with all three points.

Cwmbran Celtic hosted Cardiff City FC and looked like they were take the points off the Bluebirds, with Rhiannon Taylor breaking the deadlock in the 56th minute, only to have to share the spoils when Shannon Evans scored a late equaliser.

MBi Llandudno made the long trip to Newcastle Emlyn but two goals either side of half time made the trip worthwhile for the North Wales outfit. On target were Sofie Owen, Jemelia Bukari, Stacey Tradewell and Rosie Hughes.

Port Talbot Town welcomed Wrexham to the Genquip Stadium and three early goals from Samantha Morgan, Lauren Amor and Rachael Ball gave the hosts a solid lead. Wrexham looked like they were staging a comeback in the 28th minute thanks to a goal from Julia Morris but a goalless second half followed.
