Olivia Smith has won WSL goal of the month for September

Arsenal’s Olivia Smith has won September’s WSL goal of the month for a stunning debut strike against London City Lionesses.

Smith got off to a hot start for the Gunners in their first game of the season after breaking the transfer record in summer.

Arsenal’s record signing couldn’t have asked for a better start to life in North London.

The former Liverpool forward picked up the ball well outside the opposition box before unleashing a rocket into the top corner.

Smith’s strike was voted goal of the month by WSL fans and there was never much doubt that she wouldn’t win it.

The moment was made all the more sweet as the 21-year-old’s goal came in front of a packed Emirates stadium on her debut.

Olivia Smith & Arsenal hit bump in road

While she – much like Arsenal – kicked her season off in impressive form, both Olivia Smith and her new club have faltered in the last couple of weeks.

The Gunners haven’t won any of their last four games in all competitions, with their misery compounded by a Champions League loss to Lyon in the week.

Smith made her European debut in the loss but wasn’t able to find the back of the net.

In fact, Smith’s goal of the month is her only goal for Arsenal so far this season.

The club’s record signing has featured in every game so far this year and she has been playing well, but a second goal continues to elude last season’s young player of the year.

What next for Olivia Smith?

While Smith hasn’t scored a second goal just yet, Arsenal couldn’t have asked for a more difficult schedule.

The Gunners have faced Manchester City, United and Lyon in the past few weeks.

After the international break the club’s fixtures ease up a bit, with fixtures against Leicester and Brighton coming up next.

A clash of the titans against Chelsea is on the horizon though and Arsenal will be keen to return to form before facing the reigning champions.
