Manchester City eased into the UEFA Women’s Champions League quarter-finals with a 5-0 result over Fiorentina, making it 8-0 on aggregate.

Manchester City quickly ensured there would be no second leg shock in Florence, as inside eight minutes Georgia Stanway and Lauren Hemp combined quickly to play in Ellen White, who hit the ball into the bottom corner.

Karima Benameur needed two goes at holding a shot by Fiorentina’s Lana Clelland but it was 2-0 on 18 minutes, Esme Morgan’s header hitting an arm and Caroline Weir expertly tucking away the resulting penalty past Katja Schroffenegger.

Just after the half-hour mark, Hemp found the unmarked White who netted from six yards out, while the hosts had a late chance to get a goal back by the interval but Sara Baldi was narrowly wide following a breakaway led by Frederikke Thøgersen.

Sam Mewis added a second-half brace, the first from just outside the box, the latter when getting on the end of a Chloe Kelly ball.
