Glasgow City sit 2 points behind with a game in hand after a 2-0 victory at third-placed Celtic.
Hayley Lauder hit a Hoops’ post before Abbi Grant made the breakthrough shortly before the interval.
Approaching the hour mark, Lauder hit the bar but the rebound was fired home by Noelle Murray.
Grant was also denied by the woodwork and late on Natalie Ross hit the bar for Celtic, who are now 11 points behind the top two.
Spartans came from behind to win 3-1 away to Rangers, whom they consequently leapfrog into fifth spot.
When Spartans failed to clear a 29th-minute cross, Clare Gemmell was on hand to find the back of the net.
They were swiftly back on level terms with Bobbie Beveridge’s wind-assisted effort from the half way line.
Spartans went in front on 38 minutes as Laura Gavin intercepted before a cool finish from the edge of the box and the win was sealed 17 minutes from time.
Motherwell cut Forfar Farmington’s lead to 6 points in SWPL 2, sending them to a first loss in the top of the table clash.
Danni McGinley bundled home a Robyn Smith cross to give Forfar an early lead but Sophie Gallacher’s free-kick brought Motherwell level just after the half hour. McGinley and Smith combined again for the latter’s second goal but a Gallacher penalty soon made it 2-2 and the hosts went on to bag a late winner by Pamela Liddell.
Hearts went second on goal-difference when winning 2-0 at Buchan, scoring in each half. Ashley Carse got the first and Katie Reilly added a back-post header.
Glasgow Girls slipped to third having been held to a goalless home draw by Edinburgh University Hutchison Vale.
Basement side East Fife lost out by the odd goal in five to visitors Jeanfield Swifts. Jade McDonald’s opener was quickly cancelled out by the hosts. Despite East Fife going 2-1 up midway through the second half, McDonald doubled her tally and Megan Moss netted the winner.
