Sussex Win Southern Counties Championship

Sussex were ahead after 6 minutes after Kate Natkiel beat five players before Sian Heather finished.

The Army were level on 14 minuytes as Aldridge’s great strike from outside the box went in off the underside of the crossbar.

But Sussex restored the lead on 32 minutes, Charley Boswell squaring the ball for Paige Walder to net from close range.

Sussex struck twice in a three-minute spell before the hour mark to go 4-1 up, Walder turned the ball in after Natkiel’s shot was well saved, then Danielle Lane broke through and slotted home as the keeper rushed out.

Aldridge got her second for the Army on 63 minutes but it was 5-1 when Boswell was played in to slide the ball past the onrushing goalkeeper.

With 15 minutes remaining, the title situation was that Sussex had to concede twice to hand the Southern Counties Cup to Middlesex, while the Army were out of the equation as they needed a four-goal win.

With a minute left, Sussex made it 6-2 as Lane’s cross-shot was fired home at the back post by Phoebe Leitch.
