Peterborough Northern Star’s Cassie Steward has won the 2017 Peterborough Telegraph Sports Footballer of the Year award, ahead of professionals from the town’s top men’s team.

She was up against the whole spectrum of senior football for both sexes, amateur or professional. A look at the nominations list for this award shows how strong the competition was as it included the highly-rated Marcus Maddison and Jack Marriott of Peterborough United, the latter subject of a multi-million pound bid in the January transfer window.

Steward, striker with the East Midlands title-chasers said: “I feel delighted to have won the Footballer of the Year award and I would like to thank my team mates for being my biggest supporters. Without them I wouldn’t enjoy football as much as I do.

“Now I’m hoping we can make this season even better and finish at the top of the league. We have some big games coming up but we know what we need to do.”
