Clubs can now access up to £10,000 from Sport England’s Places and Spaces fund in partnership with Crowdfunder to create or improve facilities.
Launched in November 2021, the Sport England Places and Spaces fund initially set out to help sport clubs in the West Midlands create, enhance, or redevelop their facilities with up to £10,000 in funding as part of the Birmingham 2022 Commonwealth Games.
Now the fund, totalling £7 million, is rolling out nationally with an aim to help sports clubs bring people together and keep their communities physically active.
To receive the funding, clubs and other physical activity organisations must run a crowdfunding campaign on the Crowdfunder platform and meet certain criteria. Eligible organisations include:
- Local sports clubs
- Charities, community, voluntary and social enterprise sector organisations that deliver sport and/or physical activity in their community, including organisations that are not solely or primarily sports organisations
- Town or parish councils delivering activity within their community
- Education establishments that provide access for their whole community
Rob Love, Crowdfunder’s CEO, said: “Sport England’s Places and Spaces fund has seen some fantastic projects aiming to enhance and redevelop sports facilities for the benefit of their community as part of Birmingham 2022. The organisations that have crowdfunded have not only raised enough to make their ideas happen but have expressed many other benefits as a result of their crowdfunding campaigns: from new members, to new sponsorship partnerships, to better connections within the community.
“This fund has been accessible to the West Midlands initially and we’re now really excited to be able to support more projects across the whole of England!”
Tim Hollingsworth, Chief Executive of Sport England, said: “Birmingham 2022 must be used as a catalyst to help communities all over the country get active, connect, and have fun.
“By making our Places & Spaces fund available nationally, and focusing on areas with the greatest need, we’re allowing organisations to provide brilliant new facilities in their local area to help tackle inequalities and allow everyone to get active in outstanding environments.”
