The opening day at the FIFA Women’s U-17 World Cup in the Dominican Republic featured a 3-1 win for Spain over the United States.
Group A – Dominican Republic 0-2 Ecuador, New Zealand 1-4 Nigeria
Group B – Spain 3-1 USA, South Korea 1-1 Colombia
Jocelyn Travers conceded a third-minute own-goal and although Melanie Barcenas levelled, Noa Requena and Alba Izquierdo struck for Spain in the last 17 minutes.
South Korea and Colombia drew in the same group, as Ella Martinez’s goal was soon cancelled out by a Casey Phair penalty for the Koreans.
Nigeria were three up in under half-an-hour on the way to a 4-1 victory over New Zealand. Shakirat Moshood netted just two minutes in, Khadijat Adegoke and Faridat Abdulwahab and Taifo Afolabi all extending the lead, before Hannah Saxon replied on the hour mark.
Jaslym Tenorio bagged a first-half brace as Colombia defeated host nation Dominican Republic.
