Sofia Jakobsson has brought her time with the London City Lionesses to a close after the club confirmed a mutual agreement to terminate her contract.
Not long after the announcement, the veteran forward completed a move to Mexican side Toluca in a deal that will see her become Sweden’s highest-paid women’s player of all time.
The decision draws a line under a short but memorable spell in south London that included promotion and a historic league title.
Sofia Jakobsson leaves London City Lionesses
Jakobsson joined London City Lionesses in September 2024 as one of the first major signings of the Michele Kang era.
Her arrival brought experience and leadership to a squad pushing for promotion and the Swede quickly became an important part of the group.
Across her time with the club, Jakobsson made 22 appearances, scoring four goals and providing seven assists.
Those numbers only tell part of the story. She was a huge presence during the title-winning campaign that secured promotion to the Barclays Women’s Super League. In the WSL 2 alone, she was involved in eight goals, including a crucial winner against Newcastle during the final run-in of the season.
This season has been more challenging for Jakobsson. Injuries limited her involvement, and she made just three appearances in all competitions, one of which was a start.
Her league minutes were particularly restricted, with only 25 minutes of Barclays Women’s Super League football played, although she featured more prominently in Subway Women’s League Cup fixtures.
With increased competition for places and a desire for more regular football discussions took place between player and club. Both parties ultimately agreed that an early termination of her contract was the best outcome.
London City Lionesses confirmed the decision on social media saying “Everyone here at LCL thanks Sofia for her contribution to the club and we wish her all the best in the next chapter.”
Jakobsson moves to Mexico
That next chapter has taken Jakobsson across the Atlantic. Sportbladet revealed that the 35-year-old has signed an 18-month contract with Toluca in Mexico, a move that became official on Thursday evening.
The deal will see her become the highest-paid Swedish women’s football player ever.
Toluca’s squad already features high-profile names, including Eugenie Le Sommer and Amandine Henry.
Jakobsson will add further experience and quality to the group. Her move marks a significant step both financially and professionally as she takes on a new challenge late in her career.
What’s next for London City Lionesses?
London City Lionesses travel to Brighton on Sunday in the Women’s Super League.
During his pre-match press conference, Maestre expressed his sympathy to Dario Vidosic after the death of the Brighton manager’s father earlier this week.
The transfer window is also set to shut in the coming days. London City made one of the biggest signings of the window with the addition of Delphine Cascarino, who left the San Diego Wave.
