She Kicks Back – Sarah Wilson (Newcastle United WFC)

She’s captain of the Magpies but favours the Black Cats and has two BUCS Final successes amongst her honours.

1. Name: Sarah Wilson

2. Age (D.O.B): 22 (01/07/1991)

3. Team: Newcastle United WFC (NUWFC)

4. Position (and have you always played there)? Centre half – I joined NUWFC at the age of 18 in 2009 after going through the youth setup at Sunderland WFC. I have always been a defender.

5. Team Supporter/Fave player? My family are a mixture of both Newcastle United and Sunderland fans, I steer more towards Sunderland! My favourite player is Vincent Kompany.

6. Occupation/or what you are studying? I graduated from Northumbria University in 2012 with a BSc Sport and Exercise Science degree. I am now a qualified Personal Trainer & Fitness Coach.

7. Are there other footballers in your family? Yes my younger sister plays football, she is also part of the NUWFC family.

8. Favourite game you have played in (and why)? I have played in a number of memorable games, including both club and university football. Throughout my time at Uni I played in two major BUCS finals, beating Leeds Met (our rivals) both times on penalties, I also captained the Uni team winning our first ever league title. However, one of the favourite games I have ever played was NUWFC beating Sheffield 3-0 to secure our league title and gaining promotion back into the Northern Prem.

9. Your best attribute as a player? It’s tough to talk about yourself like that, however I would probably say my ability to talk, as a captain you need to be able to motivate everyone and also as a defender communication is so important.

10. What are your ambitions in football? My ambitions in football are to help NUWFC play at the highest level possible. I understand we have a lot of developing to do as a squad but there is no reason why we couldn’t be bidding and competing as part of the WSL.

11. Who has been the biggest influence in or on your footballing career? Probably my Dad and Grandad. They have supported me from day one and I wouldn’t have achieved anything without their help.

12. What is the best thing about playing for your team? The best thing about playing for NUWFC is that were in it together, we win together and loose together. We’ve been through a lot as a squad and it’s only made us stronger.

13. If you got to design your team’s kit, what would it look like? Well since we play under the NUFC name I would probably have to keep the black and white stripes, but a little bit of pink wouldn’t harm!

14. Do you listen to music to get you motivated, or while you train – if so, what tracks? We always have the speakers on in the changing rooms before games, usually some ‘dancing’ from one of the girls but I won’t go into that too much. As long as it’s loud enough and not sad and soppy, it tends to get everyone up for the game!

15. Who, that plays for your team, should we know more about and why? Our goalkeeper Laura Wareham has had a fantastic start to the season, so I feel she should get mentioned. Laura is still young like many of our girls and has plenty time to carry on developing. Laura is great at getting heads up and making sure were all switched on throughout the game, she literally never stops talking! Something that makes Laura who she is today, she actually broke her neck a couple of years ago in a very brave challenge. Since then she has now fully recovered and came back stronger and is continually gaining experience week in week out.
