Second Defeat At Hands Of Hungary

The FAW said that following a 3-1 defeat in their first meeting on Tuesday (14 February), Wales will be pleased with their defensively organised and solid first half performance.

Wales made an encouraging start to the first half with attacking opportunities from Anna Morphet, Bronwen Thomas and Ella Powell before Morphet fired a direct shot from the corner to put Wales ahead.

After another period of Welsh pressure, Morphet stepped up to take a free kick but Erin Riden headed the ball wide of the posts before the referee blew for half-time.

In the second-half, Wales started strong with two efforts at goal from Cassia Pike and Ffion Morgan before Hungary upped the pace. Hungarian chances came from Wales mistakes leading to a goal from Luca Papp to bring the score level before Vanessza Nagy added a second.

Wales fought back in the final minutes in an effort to equalise as Morgan took the ball upfield before crossing it into Pike but the ball was intercepted.

Wales Assistant Manager, Rehanne Skinner, commented on the improved performance to faw.cymru: “It was a much better performance today than Tuesday. The first half in particular was very good. The girls stuck to the game plan much better and we were much more coordinated and organised with everything that we were trying to achieve.

“Next up is team selection, everybody will be focused on that. We still need to work on ensuring that the the players fitness levels are coming in at peak condition ready for the [UEFA U-17 Championship] Elite Round in March.”

Wales midfielder, Bronwen Thomas, commented on the result: “I think we showed a lot more passion and want to put things right today. I think together, as a team we need to work on keeping the intensity in the second half. That was a big thing that allowed them to get back into the game.”
