Sarina Wiegman announces new England call-up with Hannah Hampton to miss game against Brazil

Hannah Hampton called out by Cata Coll over water bottle comments

England head coach Sarina Wiegman has confirmed that Hannah Hampton will miss their friendly with Brazil on Saturday, with Brighton’s Sophie Baggaley called up to the squad.

Hampton suffered a minor elbow injury during training ahead of Saturday’s game at the Etihad Stadium.

The Chelsea goalkeeper has not left the squad, so could potentially appear for the Lionesses when they meet Australia on Tuesday in Derby, if she can prove her fitness.

Hampton is the latest player to be ruled unavailable for the Lionesses during the October international break.

Katie Reid, Grace Clinton and Jess Park have all been forced to withdraw from the squad, while Leah Williamson, Lauren James and Lauren Kemp all missed Wiegman’s selection due to injuries.

On Friday morning, Wiegman also announced that Lotte Wubben-Moy had been pulled out of the squad after feeling unwell.

Sarina Wiegman confirms Hannah Hampton injury

England boss Sarina Wiegman confirmed the injury to Hannah Hampton at the beginning of her press conference on Friday.

She said: “Hannah Hampton’s not available for tomorrow. She has a small elbow injury, she will be assessed and we’ll see how she is for Tuesday.”

This injury means that there will be an England debut for one of the three goalkeepers in the squad.

Baggaley will compete with Khiara Keating and Anna Moorhouse for the starting role on Saturday.

When asked if she has picked her goalkeeper for the game, Wiegman responded: “I have made the decision but we need to get through this (training) session and then I will inform the team before I inform you (the media).”

Who is new England goalkeeper Sophie Baggaley?

Sophie Baggaley plays her club football for Brighton, where she is a back-up to No.1 option Chiamaka Nnadozie.

The 28-year-old, who previously played for Manchester United, Bristol City and Birmingham City, has played three games in the Women’s League Cup this season.

Baggaley featured for England throughout all of the youth ranks but has not made her senior debut with the role being held by Mary Earps and now Hannah Hampton.

Given her late inclusion, it appears more likely that Kheating or Moorhouse will more likely start against Brazil.

Other England team news ahead of Brazil

Wiegman spoke about several players during her press conference on Friday morning.

As well as confirming Wubben-Moy had left the squad, she also addressed Lucy Bronze, who is yet to start since returning from injury.

Bronze only recently returned for Chelsea after playing with a fractured leg at Euro 2025.

Wiegman said: “Lucy Bronze is available and she’s still building (her way back to fitness).

“I think as always, Lucy Bronze is ready to start, but whether she will start we will see tomorrow.”

Wiegman also confirmed that Keira Walsh would replace Leah Williamson as captain on Saturday if she does feature.
