Arsenal boss Renee Slegers has admitted that she was feeling the pressure on Wednesday night ahead of her team’s Champions League clash against Real Madrid.

Despite the pressure, Arsenal delivered on the biggest stage and got back on track in Europe.

Renee Slegers feeling the pressure

Arsenal’s title defence got off to a slow start after losing two of their opening three Champions League games this season.

Last week’s defeat to Bayern felt especially disappointing, as the Gunners threw away a two goal lead to lose to the German champions.

There was another tough clash for Slegers’ side on matchday four though with Real Madrid visiting Meadow Park.

“From a Champions League table perspective we were under pressure because we needed points to be able to go at least to the playoffs.” Slegers said post match. “So from that perspective, I felt we were under pressure.

“Otherwise, from the outside I don’t know- what was important internally was for ourselves to show what we can do, what we’re capable of, that we can bounce back.”

With momentum back on their side, Arsenal will feel as though they can now challenge for a second consecutive title once again.

“If we work really hard and keep on believing in the processes and everyone going in the same direction, rewards will come and that’s what’s happened today, it was a really important moment for the future.”

The Gunners shot up to ninth in the Champions League table following their win and they are within four points of table toppers Lyon.

Can Arsenal win the Champions League again?

After their win on Wednesday, Arsenal will definitely feel as if they can defend their European title once more this season.

Mariona Caldentey said before the Madrid win that Arsenal could beat anyone on their day and they proved that against Madrid on Wednesday night.

They head into the international break after a first win in the last four games and will be hoping to pick up points fast when they return.

Arsenal face Liverpool, FC Twente and Everton when they come back from the break in what is a very winnable run for Slegers’ side.
