West Ham United manager Rehanne Skinner has left her role at the club, it has been confirmed.
Her press conference to preview the Hammers’ upcoming Subway Women’s League Cup quarter-final clash with Manchester City was postponed at short notice on Thursday.
And the Guardian shortly afterwards published a report suggesting that Skinner and the club are about to part ways.
The club then confirmed the news at 2.30pm on Thursday with a statement which read: “Recent results have not matched expectations and the board of directors believe that a change is necessary to help improve the team’s position in the Barclays Women’s Super League as soon as possible.
“The board would like to thank Rehanne for her hard work and commitment during her time with the Hammers and wish her every success for the future.
“The process of recruiting a new women’s team head coach is underway. The club will make no further comment at this time.”
The statement did not say who would be leading the team in their cup match this weekend.
West Ham: their season so far
West Ham have won three of their four games in the League Cup this year – losing only to Portsmouth in the final matchday. They topped Group C, scoring 12 goals and conceding only four.
But their WSL form has been significantly less impressive. They have one win to their credit, beating Everton 3-1 in November. They also have two draws – 2-2 against fellow strugglers Liverpool last weekend, and 1-1 against Leicester City last month.
It leaves them second from bottom of the WSL table, on a goal difference of -15 – the worst in the league.
Rehanne Skinner: her role at West Ham United
Skinner was appointed to the role in the summer of 2023, having spent the three previous seasons in charge at Tottenham Hotspur.
However, this season her team have managed one win from their 11 Women’s Super League games so far, and are second-bottom of the table.
Previous West Ham managers have included the late Matt Beard, who left the club in 2020. Olli Harder spent 18 months in charge, leaving at the end of the 2021-22 season, and was replaced by Paul Konchesky.
