RefCam trialled in women’s football for the first time: When will it come to the WSL?

Refcam has been trialled across Europe and now it has been used in women’s football for the first time

There was a landmark moment in women’s football last weekend, with RefCam trialled for the first time in Poland – but when will the technology come to the WSL?

RefCam is a simple idea that has already been utilised in some top leagues in men’s football, with referee’s wearing a Go-Pro to give fans a new insight of the game from the referee’s perspective.

The technology was used in women’s football for the first time last week. RefCam was on display in the Orlen Women’s Ekstraliga game between Śląsk Wrocław and GKS Katowice.

Speaking after the game, Tomasz Flakowski, Head of Digital Innovation at the Polish Football Association discussed the groundbreaking afternoon.

“Sunday’s match between Śląsk Wrocław and GKS Katowice was not only full of sporting emotions, but also marked an important step in the development and promotion of women’s football in Poland. The tests of a RefCam, a camera worn by the referee, represent a modern innovation that lets fans experience the match through the eyes of the match official.

“We are proud that it is within the Orlen Women’s Ekstraliga that we are introducing technologies previously associated mainly with the men’s game. Such innovations enhance the appeal of broadcasts and help increase interest in women’s football.”

When is RefCam coming to the WSL?

While RefCam has already been trialled in England’s top flight of men’s football, it could be a while until the WSL gets to see the technology.

The Premier League has used the new tech on a couple of occasions but RefCam is yet to be a regular feature in any of the top leagues.

Although it could be some time until the WSL gets to see a RefCam in action, the idea is a very popular one with fans across the world enjoying the insight it brings.

With that being said, there is a chance that the top flight of women’s football in England could see RefCam used in the near future, as the league’s continue to develop.

Both the WSL and WSL2 are expanding from next season in a move that is bringing women’s football into the future.

The WSL also recently secured a partnership with leading tech giant Apple, which will see the league upgrade its equipment to the very best in football.
