Athletic Bilbao’s midweek meeting with Athletic Madrid attracted a crowd of 48,121, said to be the highest ever attendance for a competitive women’s club match in Europe.
The figure also eclipsed the biggest crowd for a men’s game at Bilbao’s San Mamés Stadium this season.
Despite the huge turnout for the home side, it was Primera División leaders Athletic Madrid who won 2-0 against their fifth-placed hosts to go through to the semi-finals of the Copa de la Reina.
The Spanish women’s national side also broke their attendance record earlier this month, when 9,182 fans saw the friendly with the USA in Alicante.
